Tolerance Cost Optimization

Variability, uncertainty and tolerance have to be considered for design process of technical systems to assure the highly required quality and reliability.  There is a class of controllable variability as tolerance, which represents the uncertainty for the manufacturing process as planning, preparation, realization and inspection. They are coupled with the realization cost. Thereby, the relationship between the required specified product functionalities and cost is highlighted.

On the one hand, narrow tolerances assure safety satisfaction of the required specifications, but they are highly cost-effort to be realized, because the manufacturing process must be more precisely. On the other hand, large tolerances are realized cost-effective, but they cause high failure probability during manufacturing process and frequently breakdown during usage. Tolerance-cost-optimization is the cost minimization until the required product specifications with a acceptable failure probability still satisfied.
